SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium: Timothy Atherton
DESCRIPTION:Title: Shape Sculpting and Shapeshifting with Soft Matter \nAbstract: Soft materials are ubiquitous in biology and are ideal candidates for advanced engineering applications including soft\, biomimetic robots\, self-building machines\, shape-shifters\, artificial muscles\, and chemical delivery packages. In many of these\, the material must make a dramatic change in shape with an accompanying re-ordering of the material; in others changes in the ordering can be used to drive or even interrupt shape change. To optimize the materials and structures\, it is necessary to have a detailed understanding of how the microstructure and macroscopic shape co-evolve. In this talk\, I will therefore discuss the interactions between order and shape evolution with examples primarily drawn from my group’s work on emulsions\, liquid crystals and other soft materials. To develop the description\, we draw upon differential geometry\, topology\, optimization theory and computer simulations. \nHost: Karen Daniels

SUMMARY:CMB - Katie Newhall
DESCRIPTION:Title: Building a Stochastic Continuum Model for a Magnetic System \nAbstract: Stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) naturally arise as continuum models for spatially-extended systems with thermal noise effects that are important to resolve\, such as spontaneous magnetization flipping.  While finite difference approximations in space can be made at large enough spatial scales to assume independent noise in space\, this assumption is clearly false in the continuum limit\, leading to both undesirable modeling and mathematical properties.  I will provide some intuition for constructing continuum models that have both spatially correlated noise yet maintain sampling the physically relevant Gibbs distribution in time.  Applying this to a spin system model of a magnet\, I will discuss some properties of the resulting dynamics. \nHost: Karen Daniels

SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium: Raju Venugopalan
DESCRIPTION:Title: The glue that binds us all: The Science of the Electron-Ion Collider \nAbstract: The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) under construction at Brookhaven National Laboratory will explore in detail the quantum world of quarks and gluons at distance scales less than a trillionth the width of a strand of hair. Though gluons are massless\, and quarks nearly so\, the emergent dynamics of these elementary objects in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) describes the vast bulk of the mass of the visible universe. Despite significant developments in our understanding of QCD\, many of the details of quark-gluon dynamics remain deeply mysterious. We will discuss some of the outstanding questions that remain and outline how finely resolved multi-dimensional images extracted from high energy electron-ion collisions at the EIC can lead to fundamental insight into the glue that binds us all. \n\nHost: Vladimir Skokov

SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium: Mengxia Liu
DESCRIPTION:Title: Carrier dynamics and transport in colloidal quantum dot arrays \nAbstract: Colloidal quantum dots are an emerging type of solution-processed semiconductors that offer a powerful platform for the scalable manufacturing of optoelectronic devices. Understanding carrier dynamics and transport in nanocrystal is crucial for unlocking their full potential for optoelectronic applications. In this talk\, I will discuss the impact of energetic polydispersity on carrier dynamics\, and the influence of imbalanced carrier transport on solar cell performance. I will present the direct visualization of non-equilibrium carrier propagation in PbS quntum dot arrays\, and how this can be controlled and optimized through novel materials processing and heterostructuring. These findings offer promising strategies to harness transport phenomena for more efficient optoelectronic devices. \nHost: Dali Sun
