SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium: Martin Thuo
DESCRIPTION:Title: Surface Thermodynamics Driven Frugal Engineering \nAbstract: Need for flexible/wearable electronics\, post-CMOS electronics\, or ultra-miniaturization of hybrid microelectronics\, calls for low temperature and autonomous (self-assembly) fabrication with concomitant need for energy efficiency during and post manufacturing. We couple fundamental surface thermodynamics and bottom-up self-assembly to design material synthesis and processing approaches that can meet these demands. First\, this talk discusses the nature of passivating oxide–bulk nanointerface (<10 nm) and underlying liquid plasticity as an ion source for ad infinitum growth of coordination (organometallic) polymers that are precursors for tunable bandgap semiconducting materials. Through directed assembly of the polymerizing materials\, new diodes and gate architectures have been realized. Secondly\, besides their synthetic utility\, felicitous choice of processing conditions can lead to surface/interface-driven tuning of the thermodynamic energy landscape of an alloy\, enabling stabilization of metastable states. This altered landscape enables frugal low energy manipulation of the material by driving relaxation or reactions via low energy pathways. This inverted landscape manifests as metastable states (specifically undercooling)\, surface composition inversion (chameleon and hedgehog-like surfaces) and inverted (inside-out) thermal degradation to create graphene/graphene oxide macrotubes. An overarching theme of this work is an ability to translate surfaces and interfaces into reservoir of high chemical potential gradients that can be tapped into for neoteric material processing\, manufacturing\, and energy efficiency. \nHost: Karen Daniels

SUMMARY:CMB - Pedro Sáenz
DESCRIPTION:Title: Hydrodynamic Spin Lattices \nAbstract: In this talk\, we will introduce a hydrodynamic analog system that allows us to investigate simultaneously the wave-mediated self-propulsion and interactions of effective spin degrees of freedom in inertial and rotating frames. Millimetric liquid droplets can walk across the surface of a vibrating fluid bath\, self-propelled through a resonant interaction with their own guiding wave fields. By virtue of the coupling with their wave fields\, these walking droplets\, or ‘walkers’\, extend the range of classical mechanics to include certain features previously thought to be exclusive to the microscopic\, quantum realm. A walker may be trapped by a submerged circular well at the bottom of the fluid bath\, leading to a clockwise or counterclockwise angular motion centered on the well. When a collection of such wells is arranged in a 1D or 2D lattice geometry\, a thin fluid layer between wells enables wave-mediated interactions between neighboring droplets. Through experiments and mathematical modeling\, we demonstrate the spontaneous emergence of coherent walker rotation dynamics for different types of lattices. For sufficiently strong pair-coupling\, wave interactions between neighboring droplets may induce local spin flips leading to ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic order. Transitions between these two forms of magnetic order can be induced through variations in non-equilibrium driving\, lattice geometry and Coriolis forces mimicking an external magnetic field. Theoretical predictions based on a generalized Kuramoto model derived from first principles rationalize our experimental observations\, establishing HSLs as a generic paradigm for active phase oscillator dynamics. \nHost: Karen Daniels

SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium: Brian Camley
DESCRIPTION:Title: Cell motility and cell shape as a playground for physics \nAbstract: Cells crawl and reorganize in the body to perform their functions\, ranging from white blood cells finding bacteria to skin cells closing over a wound. These behaviors provide huge opportunities for physicists\, not only because eukaryotic cells are actively-driven soft materials but also because cells must cope with a  noisy\, fluctuating environment. I will discuss a few examples of how my group has explored these topics across scales from nanometers to millimeters. First\, I will discuss how single septin molecules (tens of nm in size) can potentially discriminate between membranes with different curvatures at the micron scale – like an ant measuring the radius of a basketball. Second\, I will talk about how interacting proteins can cooperate to sense the shape of a cell. Finally\, I will show how cell shape can then play a role in a tissue of thousands of cells\, where anisotropic cells become aligned in patterns akin to a nematic liquid crystal. Topological defects in this liquid crystalline order then can drive changes in cell behavior\, like increases in density. These increases in density can occur if cell shape regulates cell division – and we present results from experimental collaborators suggesting division is driving these density increases. \nHost: Mary Elting
