SUMMARY:CMB Seminar - Jens Winkelmann
DESCRIPTION:Title: Columnar structures of spheres \nAbstract: Columnar structures\, many of which are helical\, refer to dense cylindrical packings of particles. They are ubiquitous\, for example\, they exist in the contexts of botany\, foams\, and nanoscience. There have been in‐depth investigations of columnar structures of both hard spheres (e.g.\, ball bearings) and soft spheres (e.g.\, wet foams)\, through computer simulations\, analytic derivations\, or simple experiments. In this seminar\, I will present you an overview of the fundamentals and applications of such structures\, based on our recently published monograph on this subject. I will review some of the theoretical and experimental methods employed to assemble such structures\, and then discuss some of the latest findings related to the structural transitions and hysteretic behaviour of such systems. \nHost: Karen Daniels

SUMMARY:CMB Seminar: Jack Featherstone
DESCRIPTION:Title: Geometry and Structure in Spiderwebs \nAbstract: Spiderwebs are fantastically versatile and complex dwellings\, hunting tools\, and defensive mechanisms\, with structures that vary from the familiar 2D circular pattern of an orb weaver to seemingly-random 3D tangles built by cobweb spiders. We look to describe the peculiar geometry and topology of webs built by “widow” spiders (Latrodectus genus) by making fully three-dimensional scans of webs built in captivity. Such a quantitative description of the geometry and topology allows us to ask questions about relationships between structure and function in webs\, like how vibrations propagate through a web\, and how the spider uses these signals to triangulate prey. \nAfter introducing some of the current research going on in the Non-linear and Non-equilibrium Physics Unit at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology\, I’ll discuss some interesting questions about the structure and function of spiderwebs\, as well as experimental and computational techniques used to investigate these questions. \nHost: Karen Daniels
