SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium: Julio Monti Belmonte
DESCRIPTION:  \nTitle: Mesoscale Computational Biophysics: From Cytoskeleton Percolation to Tissue Mechanics \nAbstract: \nBiophysics is an interdisciplinary field that combines physics\, biology\, chemistry\, and mathematics to understand complex problems in living systems. While it is best known for addressing molecular-level problems\, its range of applicability also extends to the cell and tissue scales\, often borrowing concepts from soft and active matter. In this talk\, I will highlight two recent stories from my group\, where we used theoretical and computational approaches to understand problems at these higher length scales. In the first story (at the cell level)\, I will introduce the problem of connectivity in cytoskeletal systems—a network of filaments and motors that drive the generation and transmission of forces in cells—and how a simple theoretical approach can be used to predict network outcomes in both in vivo and in vitro systems. In the second story (at the tissue level)\, I will present results from a new microscopy technique (bio-Brillouin) that revealed rapid changes in cell material properties during tissue development (on the order of minutes)\, and a physical model that demonstrates how these dynamic changes in both space and time optimize morphogenesis. \nAdd team comment

SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium: Andrey Tarasov
DESCRIPTION:Title: Factorization and perturbative QCD in the era of Electron-Ion Collider \nAbstract: The future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at the Brookhaven National Laboratory is a uniquely capable machine which is designed to address some of the most profound questions about the properties of nuclear matter. To unravel the rich structure of hadrons\, the EIC will provide precision imaging of a strongly bounded many-body parton system inside the hadrons. The dynamics of this system give rise to such fundamental properties of the hadron as spin and mass. The strong QCD (Quantum Chromodynamics) medium inside the hadron can be probed in the high-energy scattering experiments within the QCD factorization approach through a subtle interplay between its perturbative and non-perturbative components. I will demonstrate that for many observables at EIC\, such as the search of the saturation\, three-dimensional imaging of the hadron\, the chiral anomaly effects etc.\, an adequate description of this interplay requires development of novel methods and calculation techniques. I will introduce a general framework for such techniques which is based on application of the background field method. I will show how implementation of such methods allows us to systematically understand the properties of the dense QCD medium inside the hadron and put the light on the origin of its most fundamental properties.
