DESCRIPTION:Title: Conformations of Polyampholytic Disordered Proteins: Does Nature Use Multicriticality \nAbstract: Recent advancements in understanding intracellular organization have been significantly attributed to the application of polymer physics methods. A notable example is the formation of membraneless organelles from intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs)\, which can be described as liquid-liquid phase separation in a polyampholyte (PA) solution. This inspired us to apply the similar theoretical framework to single-chain PAs. We constructed a comprehensive scaling diagram of PA conformations\, covering a broad range of salt concentrations and charge imbalances—from net-neutral PAs to polyelectrolytes carrying charges of only one sign. Theoretically predicted scaling laws were quantitatively confirmed through simulations.\nThe most intriguing feature of the conformational diagram is the presence of the point where regimes of swollen chains\, globules\, and necklaces meet. It is analogous to the multicritical Lifshitz point in macroscopic systems of ionic polymers (e.g. solutions and coacervates)\, where disordered\, homogeneous ordered\, and periodically modulated ordered phases coexist. Although our scaling estimates are inevitably approximate\, they demonstrate that at intracellular salt concentration\, the composition of real IDPs places them near this (single-chain analog of) Lifshitz point. We hypothesize that these strong\, critical fluctuations in IDPs’ shape and size provide them with the high conformational heterogeneity and susceptibility necessary for their functions in signaling and regulation. A related question is whether the IDP composition could have been evolutionarily tuned for this purpose. In other words\, does nature intentionally employ multicriticality?

DESCRIPTION:Title: Shape-shifting mechanics for adaptive cities  \nAbstract: Rapid urbanization is intertwined with urgent\, climate change related threats to human well-being and environmental health. Meanwhile\, much of our built environment relies on static structures\, which require substantial energy input for cooling and other interventions — resources often unavailable to much of the global population. Addressing these challenges requires sustainable designs\, that respond to changing environmental conditions to maintain the comfort and safety of urban inhabitants. Shape-shifting\, slender structures offer an approach by guiding the design of morphing systems\, that can regulate the surrounding environment. Here\, we present two examples where fundamental mechanics insights\, gained through experiments and simulations\, enable the development of interactive\, meter-scale prototypes that modulate wind and/or light. Specifically\, we demonstrate how controllably buckling structures based on kirigami (“cut paper”) can improve ventilation in urban spaces\, and how circumferential buckling of confined\, thin sheets forms the basis of a testbed for adaptive shading and human-architecture interaction.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Adaptability Through Control in Robotic and Active Systems \nAbstract: One of the hallmarks of adaptive matter is the ability to sense and respond to the environment. How can we engineer soft matter systems to exhibit such behavior? In this talk\, I will present our recent findings on systems driven by centimeter-scale actuators (electric motors) and nanometer-scale actuators (myosin motors)\, using methods from control theory to either design function or probe system properties. Such control-theoretical approaches are often exploited in engineering applications.
