Looking further
Many fields of research are interdisciplinary. That means that you may find a research advisor whose home department is not in physics. Students have worked on physics Ph.D.’s under direction by faculty members in electrical and computer engineering, materials science, biomedical engineering, textiles … . You will defend your thesis to a committee that includes members of the physics department and your advisor.
